A F3 tornado tore through Stoughton, a town of 12,500 located near Madison, Wisconsin on August 18th, with the most severe part hitting a neighborhood where and ICF home was under construction. A total of 45 homes were leveled or sustained severe damage in the immediate area. The ICF home suffered minimal roof damage, notice the structure in comparison to the surrounding homes.
This picture graphically demonstrates how ICF homes save lives and is the number one material available on the market for strength and durability against natural disasters.
The above photos are of neighboring homes, taken at the same time; and illustrate very well why green building's first priority is the building envelope. (The home on the left is a traditional stick-built home, while the home on the right is an ICF home.) Notice the difference in heat leakage between the two homes. The building envelope consists of the basement floor, all of the exterior walls, doors and windows, and the roof. A home is heated or cooled for most of the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
An ICF home is quieter, safer, and healthier. There are very few design limitations. An ICF home has many significant benefits over a traditional built home. Some of the more considerable benefits of an ICF home include: significant noise reduction, excellent indoor air quality, comfort that you have to experience to appreciate, on average an ICF wall system is 8 times stronger than a traditional home, higher resale value, lower maintenance with a longer life expectancy.
